"Village On The Isle is sponsoring the Winter Forum because the purpose of SCOPE and the Winter Forum mesh nicely with our Mission Statement. Village On The Isle has been a leader in promoting a continuum of care for seniors over the past 27 years in the greater Venice community. Each year the Winter Forum  leads our community to thoughtful discussion and reflection on topics around optimal aging.  The fourth Winter Forum promises to be exceptional and we hope to see you there."
~ Tom Kelly, CEO of Village on the Isle

GOAL / PURPOSE

The 2010 Winter Forum on Aging will focus on what People Need over the Lifespan.  Our aim is to understand the complexities of aging and change the community and its institutions to support and encourage rather than constrain and limit.

ELEMENTS

Dual Speakers:

  • Phyllis Moen, Ph.D.: "The Perfect Storm-- The Perfect Opportunity?"
Phyllis Moen holds the McKnight Presidential Chair in Sociology at the University of Minnesota.  We will examine, with Dr. Moen, issues of adult development, public engagement, and aging. “What do adults need to feel healthy and happy? What do adults want, need, and how do they existing arrangements lag behind?”  Nevertheless, how can adults customize their own life courses?

  • Mick Smyer, Ph.D.: “The 21st Century Workforce:  Lewis & Clark Meet an Aging America”
Are you ready for the workforce of the 21st century? Are employers? Are employees?  How should we think about work and retirement in an aging America?
Dr. Smyer, a national expert on aging and its ramifications, will draw on his experience as a gerontologist and former co-director of the Sloan Center on Aging and Work to provide initial answers and more food for thought. Smyer will focus on adult development and aging, with special attention to the impact of the contexts of aging and the workplace. Dr. Smyer is currently the Provost at Bucknell University

Dramatic Solutions:

The actors will dramatize a single issue; the facilitator, Gail Golden, will lead the audience in a reaction to the issue presented.  The end result will be asking the audience how they can address this issue, meet the challenge and create change.  See Dramatic Solutions—Interactive Business Theatre.
