RACE & CULTURAL RELATIONS
It’s social. It’s economic. It’s political. It’s hiding behind shadows. It’s in your face. For many, talking about race and cultural issues isn’t as easy as discussing the weather or last night’s reality show. The topic is incredibly important, complex, and emotional – it touches our community in many ways. SCOPE invites community members to have a new conversation about race and cultural relations. Discover how every community member can support a vibrant and inclusive community.

COALITION FOR INCLUSION & DIVERSITY

What is the CID?
Sarasota County and surrounding communities are becoming increasingly diverse as they grow. The CID exists for residents, business and associations who want to be proactive in harnessing our diversity as a catalyst for creating a vibrant, healthy and inclusive community. We do this by providing forums and opportunities for connection that create relationships, build bridges and give community partners the opportunity to collaborate and learn together.

Speaking of Diversity - Diversity Awareness Workshops
Speaking of Diversity is a 3-4 hour conversation-based interactive workshop for adults. The workshop explores three important areas in which diversity impacts our lives:

  • Assumptions: Humans couldn’t get through their day with out making certain assumptions about others. However, sometimes assumptions can lead to stereotypical thinking that separates us from others. In the workshop we explore our assumptions so that we are of aware them and their impact on our interactions.
  • Privilege: In American society today some people enjoy economic, social, political and other privileges that are unavailable to others based purely upon the race, religion, location or other group into which they were born. The workshop has participants consider their own privileges (or lack thereof) and how the often unacknowledged system of privilege delegation operates in society.
  • Speaking up: When one encounters discrimination or bigotry, speaking up and addressing it can be difficult and anxiety causing. We discuss this difficulty and share ideas for being better prepared to speak up.

Outcomes of Program since 2005:

  • 250…. Number of people reached through workshops
  • 8……. Number of organizations reached through workshops
  • 90……Percent evaluations indicating that participants reported that the workshop met their expectations and was of value to them
  • 8 …….Number of community leaders that have acted as volunteer facilitators
  • 4……..Number of volunteer facilitators in training

CID Youth Initiative
Adult and youth members of the CID work together to support youth and diversity in our community. Here is a list of community accomplishments in 2007

  • CID raised over $7,000 in community support to send 7 students from 5 district schools (Booker, Triad, Cardinal Mooney, Venice and North Port High Schools) to attended Anytown, a 5 day residential diversity awareness and leadership program
  • Three Unity Days (Day long in-school workshops) were conducted at North Port High School, and Laurel Civic Center Summer Program reaching 130 youth. Six more Unity Days are being planned for next year reaching 300 students.
  • Anytown students at North Port and Cardinal Mooney High Schools have started Diversity Clubs at their schools
  • Ongoing youth/adult partnerships intend to expand presence of diversity programming in schools and communities

Community Forum: Hate Crimes
The Coalition for Inclusion & Diversity convened 200 community members on Sunday, October 21 to address the question, "How can our community prevent and respond to hate crimes?" The program included stories from a family affected by a recent hate crime, an expert speaker on hate crimes from the Anti-Defamation League and a panel with representatives from local media and law enforcement. Topic conversations sparked ideas for taking action to prevent and respond to hate crimes.

The CID also collected over 50 letters of support for the family victimized by the July 6 arson and vandalism hate crime.

Diversity Directory
Imagine a directory that had all the different groups, clubs and organizations in our community that work to foster an inclusive community that values diversity. This brief survey is being conducted by the CID in order to create such a directory. Diversity-focused nonprofits, agencies, clubs, associations, etc. are encouraged to participate. By publishing the directory, the CID intends to connect diversity-focused efforts in our community and provide access to residents.

Not sure if your group or organization fits? Questions about the survey can be directed to Jake Thomas at jthomas@scopexcel.org or 941-365-8751.
